Pairi Daiza: a second extremely rare birth of a Golden snub-nosed monkey!

Pairi Daiza and the China Wildlife Conservation Association reach a milestone for Golden snub-nosed monkeys.

A second Golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) has been born at Pairi Daiza on 20 April, just a few weeks after an already historic first birth on 17 March. Two rare births in a very short space of time.

On the evening of 20 April, a new baby was born.

"Juan Juan and Liuyun's baby was born safely on 20 April at 10.30 p.m. We were able to confirm that the baby had indeed drunk the colostrum, which is very good news. It was a very important moment for the whole team", explains Yang Liu, veterinary surgeon.

After the arrival in May 2025 of three Golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana), the females Lu Lu and Juan Juan, and the male Liuyun, and their careful acclimatisation to their habitat specially designed to faithfully reproduce their natural environment, the first birth already marked a historic milestone for Europe. This second birth now confirms the solidity of the programme and the quality of the scientific and veterinary support provided.

During these crucial first moments, the mother and her young get to know each other out of sight of the visitors, in a calm, secure environment that guarantees the best possible conditions for their well-being.

The programme is based on close cooperation with the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA), founded on a high level of trust, mutual respect and scientific rigour between the Chinese and Belgian teams.

Like the first birth on 17 March, this event is part of a structured breeding and awareness programme.

Very few zoological institutions worldwide currently participate in such a programme. Pairi Daiza is the only institution in Belgium to host and present this exceptional species, and is honoured to continue, alongside its Chinese partners, this shared commitment to the conservation of the most endangered species.

Rare animals thrive here in harmony, centuries-old trees and fragile plants stand in dialogue with remarkable architectures from across the globe and the Earth’s mineral treasures. Within the ancient Abbey walls, precious stones from across the globe find their place, Brazilian amethysts, Chinese jade, native copper from Michigan, and intricate Pietra Dura mosaics, timeless reminders that beauty knows no borders and no end.

Repeatedly named “Best Zoo in Europe” and celebrated by leading international travel guides, Pairi Daiza has become Belgium’s top tourist destination. A visit goes far beyond the concept of a zoo. It is a living work of art, a transformative space where nature, culture, and humanity converge.
