Rare Birth of a King Penguin at Pairi Daiza

Pairi Daiza has welcomed an exceptional birth in its colony of King Penguins. The result of more than two months of patience and incubation, this rare chick represents a major success for the European breeding program (EEP) in which the Park participates.

The first days of life are crucial for a penguin chick, but the newborn and its parents are doing great. Sheltered between the feet of its parents, Rose and Wilson, the chick benefits from constant attention and exemplary care. For now, it is still too early to determine its sex: this is done through DNA analysis of feathers, and the keepers prefer to wait so as not to disturb its development.

A Rare Birth

The reproductive cycle of the King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is particularly long: it lasts about 14 to 15 months, meaning the species reproduces on average only twice every three years. This slow rhythm, unique among birds, results from the time required for incubation and chick rearing until fledging.

At Pairi Daiza, as in other zoological parks, King Penguin populations are managed as part of the European breeding program (EEP), which coordinates reproduction efforts and raises awareness of marine ecosystem conservation. In the wild, these birds are facing growing pressures linked to climate change, which shifts food resources essential for their survival and that of their chicks.

This is the second time the Park has had the joy of welcoming a King Penguin chick, but it is a first that the chick gets out of the egg without human help.

“Each birth is another victory for this species, but it is also a moment of tenderness that touches us deeply. For us, it’s a great source of pride.” – The King Penguin keeper team

Pairi Daiza created "The Land of the Cold" to meet the needs of these penguins and other cold-adapted Arctic species, such as polar bears and walruses. This habitat replicates their natural cold environment, allowing visitors to observe these fascinating animals up close.

The Penguin Cave was designed and built to mimic the penguins' natural habitat and is home to three penguin species.

With this new birth, and following the arrival last March of Rockhopper Penguins from Marineland in France, the Pairi Daiza colony now includes:

7 King Penguins,

16 Rockhopper Penguins

41 Gentoo Penguins.
